The Panama Canal is experiencing its most severe drought in over 143 years, resulting in significantly lowered water levels at Gatun Lake, a vital component of the canal’s operations. Recent reports indicate that the water level is at 24.2 meters, a considerable decrease from the typical 26.6 meters observed in past years. This decrease is primarily due to the El Niño phenomenon, which has reduced rainfall by 41% compared to average years.
Direct Impact on Shipping and Yacht Transport
This drought has led the Panama Canal Authority to implement stringent measures to manage the water crisis. As per the Advisory To Shipping No. A-48-2023 by the Panama Canal Authority, the daily transit capacity through the canal has been reduced significantly. This means the number of booking slots for ships is now limited to 25 per day, down from the previous number (32).
For our industry, this translates to extended waiting times, reaching up to sixteen days for vessels similar to those we operate.
